Reunion Ramblings - thodaa tadka maar ke
It all started in real earnest right after the 91 batch had their 25-year reunion, almost a year ago. It was soon very clear who was going to own it! Badri took the responsibility and formed a strong core team around him. He made a few mistakes in recruiting, yours truly being one, but he kept the team going with his saam, daan, bedh, dandopaayam until the end!
Man, did the team respond or what? The result was there for everyone to see ...kudos to the core team and everyone who participated with enthusiasm!
As I boarded the flight on 20th morning from Hyderabad couple of thoughts were racing thru my mind! One was about the very first day I came by train to Mangalore station along with my father when it started to pour and a senior from my hometown helped me buy the essentials of our college life: raincoat and the slippers, before we took the bus to hostels. Flashing by were the best and worst moments of the first year: ragging and the welcome party! The only thing that kept us all going thru the ragging period was the knowledge that all the other buggers were also getting screwed like you are! (if rumors were to be believed, bongs and mallus were copping more 😀. I suspect they were told that it was worse for gultes!)
The second thought I had was about how the reunion was going to be, who I would be running into unexpectedly, if I would be able to recognize everyone who recognizes me, will I have a good time or not, I was anxious like George Costanza of the Seinfeld fame! All these anxieties were put to rest when Delhi Ganesh messaged me to meet him and Kaul at Motimahal.
I checked into Deepa Comforts and immediately set off to meet them. On the way, I gave into the temptation of having a Gadbad at ideals, a quick look at the old bus stand and a peek into the Mangalore railway station for the reservation counter where countless hours were spent to book tickets for the Madras mail for our semester holidays.
Finally made it to Motimahal and the party got started immediately with the arrival of busanga (Abdul Rahaman)! It went on and on into the night, gathering momentum as more and more dudes started joining the party. It was hilarious to see Sreepad trying to convince Milind to join us at Motimahal while Milind was trying to get him to Redrock!
Happy to report that Sreepad made the wise choice to stay with us😛
Unbeknownst to us, dark clouds were gathering over KREC, the all-seeing, all-powerful “Eye of Nazeer” was eagerly waiting atop the Samudra Darshan to disrupt the reunion at any cost.
Yoda baba was able to sense the disturbance in the force and said to himself “stop this, I will”. He devised various ways to ward off the evil eye.
He instructed princess Leia to distribute dry fruits to increase the midi-chlorian count to boost the force field in all of us (She ignored his repeated requests to wear the gold bikini though :-) Better luck for the golden jubilee, pun intended!
C3-PanchO and Rags araWindu conducted the cultural events, dumb charades and all the students participated in the felicitation of the professors.
Ajedish skywalker was asked to carry one “goli bajji”, carefully wrapped in the folds of his lungi, to be submerged in the Arabian Sea, to prevent the high tide during beach party.
Basheer-kenobi came from Dubai to serve Maggi, burji and the famous “bun” tea, created a protective shield around SAC, which kept the rains away, while we enjoyed the trip down the memory lane. Thank God, he did not use the “Obliviate” charm on us!
These brave acts lessened the impact but the empire struck back! Han Raju slipped and got a cut just above his left eye. It took several trips to hospitals and a CT scan only to find faint traces of brains and no signs of either mental or physical ageing since '92 😀
The damage to our festivities would have been more severe if the folks had consumed the contaminated biriyani at the beach, so Yoda baba made sure that the biriyani self-destructed before reaching the beach! To put it mildly, You would have been severely dehydrated without his timely intervention.
This is the inside story of how the evil was defeated and the middle earth was made safe to host the final night revelries. The dark forces tried one last trick and kidnapped Partani that delayed the start of the Haka performance.
No ransom was paid for his release; they just let him go once he started telling them about the differences between “Marwadis” and “Mewadis” 😝
Unfortunately, I do not (want to) recollect what happened after the “ka mate haka” during the DJ Nite! All I know is I had a bloody good time and hope everyone had a great time too!
With the New Year coming up it is the resolution time so here’s mine after attending our reunion:
I want to dance like Ganesh,
pursue my passion like Ajitesh, be a social butterfly like Kups, be a gentleman like Raviraj Nayak, have a mansion like Anjuli, have an accent like Sondhi’s, have a stache like SP Singh's, be as rich as Rajaram, as witty as Appa, as humble as Peeyush, as energetic as Dipa, as cool as Kavitha, as idealistic as Raju, look as young as Sangeeta, as diligent as Nisha, as caring as Gulve, as knowledgeable as Badri, as resourceful as Pandey, as artistic as Gowda, as tall as Ganti, as kind-hearted as Veera, as helpful as Hallur, as confident as Jayku, as intelligent as PB, as sporting as Panchu, as philanthropic as MP Rajesh, as thoughtful as Sarin, as funny as Chief Reddy, as adventurous as Madhu Hegde, as lively as Raghu, as hard-working as Partani And last but not the least....
